Where travel nurses actually live on Hawaii Island: home bases for each hospital, how 13-week contracts fit Hawaii's 31-night minimum, and what to ask a landlord.
We've hosted enough traveling healthcare professionals at our home in Waikoloa Village to know the housing search is often the most stressful part of a Big Island assignment. The island is bigger than every other Hawaiian island combined, the hospitals are far apart, and the short-term rental rules are different from the mainland. Here's the practical rundown we wish every travel nurse got with their contract.
Hawaii Island has three main hospitals, and they sit in three very different parts of the island. Where you live should follow directly from where you'll work.
Queen's North Hawaii Community Hospital (Waimea/Kamuela). Part of The Queen's Health Systems, this hospital sits in the cool upcountry ranch town of Waimea (the post office calls it Kamuela). If your assignment is here, Waikoloa Village is one of the most convenient home bases on the island: the drive is roughly 20–25 minutes of open highway, and you come home to the sunny, dry leeward side after a shift in often-misty Waimea.
Kona Community Hospital (Kealakekua). Operated by the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation's West Hawaii Region, this hospital is in Kealakekua, south of Kailua-Kona. From Waikoloa Village the drive runs roughly an hour, so most Kona Community nurses prefer housing in Kailua-Kona or Keauhou; Waikoloa Village works best here only if you value quiet over commute.
Hilo Benioff Medical Center (Hilo). The island's largest hospital — formerly Hilo Medical Center, renamed after a 2024 gift from Marc and Lynne Benioff — anchors the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation's East Hawaii Region and operates a Level III trauma center. It's on the rainy windward side, well over an hour from us across the Daniel K. Inouye Highway, so for Hilo assignments we honestly recommend living Hilo-side.
Hawaii County law limits rentals like ours to stays of 31 nights or longer outside resort zones. For travel nurses, this is a non-issue: a standard 13-week assignment is about 91 nights, so a monthly furnished rental fits naturally. One agreement covers your whole contract, and if your assignment extends, extending a monthly rental is usually a single email — something an extended-stay hotel can't always promise during peak season.
Most agencies pay a housing stipend rather than placing you in company housing, which means the difference between a good and bad housing choice lands in your pocket. Extended-stay hotels on the Kohala Coast are resort-priced, and most lack a real kitchen and in-unit laundry — which matters over 13 weeks of night shifts and meal prep. A furnished monthly home gives you a full kitchen, full-size laundry, reliable WiFi, and a door that closes on a real neighborhood. Booking direct with an owner also means no platform service fees, so more of your stipend goes to the actual housing. Do budget for Hawaii's general excise and transient accommodations taxes, which add roughly 18–19% — an honest landlord will itemize them up front.
